Opening Doors to Higher Education

Grant RecipientsMembers of the School of Education at The College of New Jersey recently announced the receipt of nearly $50,000 in grant funding from the National Down Syndrome Society, which will allow the creation, in conjunction with Mercer County Community College, of a postsecondary education experience for students with Down syndrome and other intellectual disabilities.


New Jersey Gubernatorial Candidates Debate at TCNJ

CandidatesOn October 18, the College welcomed political supporters, students, media, and a variety of guests from around the tri-state area as it played host to a 2005 New Jersey gubernatorial debate. Four candidates squared off on the Music Building Concert Hall stage in an hour-long forum sponsored by TCNJ, The League of Women Voters of New Jersey, and the Philadelphia and New York affiliates of ABC television.


TCNJ Student, Alumna Garner Prestigious UPE Scholarships

ThulThurberTwo computer science students from The College of New Jersey were among 19 worldwide who have received prestigious Upsilon Pi Epsilon (UPE) international scholarships this year.

 


Symposium Marks 150th Anniversary for Whitman, TCNJ

Whitman CollectionThe Walt Whitman Sesquicentennial Symposium, held at The College of New Jersey on September 22-24, brought the nation’s top Whitman and American literature scholars to campus for an array of events that included a dual celebration of the 150th anniversaries of both TCNJ and Whitman’s Leaves of Grass.


TCNJ Presents Property Tax Forum

“We know we have a property tax problem” in the state of New Jersey, Dr. Henry Coleman told a crowd in Brower Student Center on the evening of September 29. But that was hardly news to the attendees of the property tax issue debate, co-sponsored by the New Jersey Coalition for the Public Good and The College of New Jersey’s Leadership in Public Affairs Program.


Office of Anti-Violence Initiatives Earns Second Federal Grant

OAVI Sign In late September, the College received word that the Office of Anti-Violence Initiatives (OAVI) was approved for refunding by a grant from the United States Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women. The two-year grant totals $181,575.

  


Community Learning Day Focuses on Cross-Cultural Issues

SetrapiOn October 12, the College hosted “The Face of the Other,” the sixth annual Community Learning Day. The event’s keynote speaker, Marjane Satrapi, author of Persepolis: The Story of A Childhood, spoke about her controversial book, in which she uses the story of her childhood to tell a larger tale about of her native country of Iran.

 


Municipal Land Use Center Welcomes Delegation of Chinese Environmental Officials

Environmental officials from the Wuhan District of China recently visited with Martin Bierbaum and the staff of the Municipal Land Use Center (MLUC) at The College of New Jersey. Their intent was to learn about the MLUC’s efforts to improve coordination and integration of local municipal land-use decision-making and transportation planning, while at the same time addressing a variety of environmental issues, including wetlands restoration, wastewater treatment, and solid waste disposal
