Blue skies ahead for class of 2006

grad 1An evening of torrential rain that threatened to cancel the May 12 Commencement ceremonies gave way to sunshine on the big day for more than 1,400 degree candidates.

Basking under breezy trees and blue skies, students lined up by academic school along the pathways between Lions’ Stadium and stretched all the way back to Ely, Allen, and Brewster Halls as they helped each other dress in their gowns, hoods, and mortarboards.

"This is such a wonderful day," said senior English major Nicole Kukawski as she prepared to carry the banner representing the School of Culture and Society, along with her two friends--Marisa Margarucci and Sara Slater, both psychology majors. “I can’t believe the day is finally here.”

Pristine weather conditions helped the graduation ceremony get of to its scheduled 10 a.m. starting time. The academic processional into Lions' Stadium began with TCNJ Wind Ensemble. Courtney Scholz, senior music performance major, performed the national anthem.

In her welcoming remarks, President Gitenstein spoke of the achievements of the students, and how strength and support from family and friends helped each graduate along the way. “None of us succeeds alone,” she said.

In conclusion, she said to the graduates: “I wish for you a life of promise and influence, and the courage to base decisions on your convictions, which are anchored in deeply felt values. I know that we at The College of New Jersey are fortunate to call you our alumni.”

grad 2Provost Steve Briggs presented this year’s candidates for honorary degrees: New Jersey 14th District Assemblyman Bill Baroni, New Jersey 15th District Assemblywoman Bonnie Watson Coleman, and U.S. House of Representatives 4th District Chris Smith. Each recipient was recognized for his or her work in community, education, and civil rights in New Jersey and around the world.

Megan Baglivio, senior class president, David Wetzel, senior class treasurer, and Joseph Bandelli, senior class vice president, each took the stage to present remarks, words of wisdom, and gifts to the College, including the class banner. Jacqueline Caprio, senior music education major, performed the College’s alma mater as the recessional to individual departmental ceremonies began.

As proud friends and family members filed out of Lions’ Stadium, comments such as “The day was absolutely gorgeous,” and “What a lucky charm we have here, this TCNJ class of 2006” were heard over and over again.

Best of luck to the Class of 2006.
