Recruitment is commonly referred to
as "rush." The Panhellenic Association follows the Recruitment guidelines set
forth by the NPC. Because of this, Recruitment at The College of New Jersey is
set up as a mutual selection process, and lasts approximately one week. Women
who are seeking to become members of a sorority, and therefore are participating
in the Recruitment activities, are known as Potential New Members. Recruitment
is designed so that Potential New Members and the sorority sisters interact with
each other; this helps both groups make educated decisions about which chapters
match best with which Potential New Members.
Helping with this process are the Rho Gammas (Rush Guides). Rho Gammas are
sisters who guide Potential New Members through the period of Recruitment; they
attend Recruitment activities with Potential New Members, explain the processes
involved, and offer advice about how to find the organization which best suits
the Potential New Member. During Recruitment, Rho Gammas are disaffiliated. They
are not allowed to associate with their sisters during this time period, and the
organizations that they are members of must remain anonymous. This is because
Rho Gammas guide Potential New Members through the entire Recruitment process,
and therefore, the affiliation of a Rho Gamma may influence the Potential New
Member's decision about which sorority best suits her.
Recruitment culminates with Bid Day Party. On Bid Day, Potential New Members
receive their bids (a bid is an invitation to join a sorority), and the chapters
discover which women will soon be joining their sorority. Also on this day, the
affiliations of the Rho Gammas are revealed. After Bid Day, Potential New
Members are known as "New Members" of their specified organization. Bid Day is
always exciting, because the addition of New Members always changes the
sorority--for the better!
