| Background: The Psychology Department contains many faculty who conduct research that requires research participants. The PIPER pool helps support this very important contribution to science. Student participation is highly valued and appreciated by the faculty. The Psychology Department also values the benefits of experiential learning. PIPER is one means of promoting this value. The PIPER requirement enhances student learning by providing firsthand experience with research. Furthermore, participants will learn about the kinds of research experiences and labs that will be available to them as upper-class students. Students sign up and complete research studies for PIPER credits (1 PIPER credit is awarded for each half-hour of research participation). The entire research study system is online and all the crediting is handled by this system. |
| What you can do: 1. Be aware that there is an alternative to completing PIPER studies. Students can read about this option and learn how to complete this alternative assignment by consulting the piper information webpage for participants. 2. Add a section to your syllabus that describes the PIPER requirement. Download a word document that has sample descriptions for PSY 101, 121, 299 and courses offering extra credit. You should be able to cut and paste a sample paragraph and modfiy it for your syllabus with little effort. 3. Discuss the PIPER requirment with your class when you introduce the course and syllabus. Points to cover when you introduce PIPER: (a) the penality is one half a
letter
grade deduction when students fail to earn the required number of PIPER
credits or complete the alternative assignment
(b) the PIPER requirement is 10 credits for PSY 101, PSY 121, and PSY 299. (c) Please direct students to the PIPER main website (http://www.tcnj.edu/~piper) for the most up to date rules and requirements for research participants. (d) Research studies appear each day. It can be a little slow early in the semester. The bulk of the studies are available from the middle towards the end of the semester. So, students should plan accordingly. You can log into the PIPER system (use your unix name and password) and you can view the studies that are available at any time. 4. Students who wish to complete the alternative assignment or who are under 18 (on October 15th) should be directed to the PIPER coordinator (piper@tcnj.edu). 5. At the end of the semester, check to see if your students completed the PIPER requirement. Students must apply credit to your class in order for it to count. I recommend that you tell students to apply credits by the last day of class (I would put this in your syllabus also), so that any credit problems can be corrected before you assign final grades. PIPER Credits in SOCS:
a. Log into your course in SOCS b. Click on the "Administrator" button. c. Click on the "Course Statistics" link. d. In the upper left-hand corner of the course statistics page you will see a button that enables you to view PIPER credit. Click it ON and PIPER credits for each student will be displayed in the far right-hand column. Any student who does not
complete the PIPER requirement should receive a one-half letter grade
deduction from his or her final grade.
