Software Utilities

There are many software utilities available for your personal computer. The following utilities are recommended for use by RES.net:

PC Software
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader

    For reading Adobe Acrobat files with the extension PDF, the format for many online manuals and documents at TCNJ.
  • Lavasoft's Ad-aware

    A feature-limited version of Lavasoft's Ad-aware that helps eliminate spyware/adware and protect your privacy.
  • McAfee Stinger

    A free antiviral utility for eliminating many of the most common viruses.
  • Microsoft Office XP/03 Compatibility Pack

    By installing the Compatibility Pack along side of Microsoft Office XP, or Office 2003, you will be able open, edit, save, and create files using the Open XML Formats new to the 2007 Microsoft Office system.
  • SpyBot Search & Destroy

    A completely free tool for eliminating spyware and adware.
  • SSH Security Client

    A free, non-commercial secure shell and secure file tranfer client that is used on campus computers.
  • Windows Anti Virus Software

    TCNJ provides McAfee Antivirus which attempts to identify, thwart and eliminate computer viruses and other malicious software (malware).
  • Winsock Fix

    A useful utility for restoring default network and Internet settings.
Macintosh Software
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader

    A Macintosh version of the Adobe Acrobat Reader for reading Acrobat files with the extension PDF, the format for many online manuals and documents at TCNJ.
  • Microsoft Office Open XML File Format Converter

    With the Office Open XML Converter, you can convert certain Office 2007 files (*.docx, *.docm, *.pptx, *.ppsx, *.potx) to a format that is compatible with Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac and iWork '06 or earlier for Mac. You can choose to convert and open one file, or convert a large number of files. This solution still does not allow you to save in the Open XML format.
