SPRING 2012
history
In the fall of 1998 Lisa Ripa and Danielle Gonzalez formed the Women’s Rugby Club at The College of New Jersey. The team practiced during the fall season but did not begin to participate in matches until the spring of 1999. The team was coached and assisted by a few of the players on the TCNJ Men’s Rugby Club. The team began to gain experience and learn more and more about the sport. In the fall of 1999 the club won the Division III Championships at Princeton. After this victory there was opportunity to move into the Division II level of play. The spring challenge match was played and the team unfortunately lost to Franklin & Marshall.
The club grew and expanded and began to be regularly coached by Joseph Maringola and Matt Davis, two of the players on the men’s team. The club has participated in various tournaments over the past few years, buts 7’s as well as 15’s. In the spring the club participates in the West Chester University Women’s Collegiate Rugby Tournament. And in the summer the team enters three 7’s tournaments (Subaru Sun and Sand’s in Lewes, Delaware, Boddington’s, and Sea Isle City, NJ).
In the fall of 2001, the club participated, for the first time, in TCNJ’s week long Homecoming event. Since then, the club had joined with the Men’s Rugby Club or other clubs to compete in various activities. The club also participates in other campus affairs, such as Lollanobooza, the annual activities fairs, and other fundraising events.
The club currently stands as a Full Member of the Eastern Pennsylvania Rugby Union, and places third in Division II play. The team has grown not only in numbers but also in talent over the past few years and it is looking forward to many successful seasons in the future!
