Student Leadership Awards Descriptions
The Student Leadership Awards ceremony will feature approximately twenty awards in three categories:
Awards will be given to both individuals and groups defined as student organizations, athletic teams or residence hall staffs. Please read below for detailed descriptions about the awards.
All scholarship awards are for individuals and are self-nominated. Students interested in applying for one or more of the Scholarship Awards are asked to complete the web form found at the link below. Applications are due Monday, March 24, 2008. Recipients will be notified on or about Thursday, April 10, 2008 and will officially receive recognition at the Student Leadership Awards on Sunday, April 27, 2008.

Bessie Cutter Perlman Award
Awarded to a student with differing abilities who has demonstrated a commitment to community service. To be eligible for this award, applicants must be registered with the Office of Differing Abilities. This award is provided by the late Bessie Cutter Perlman, class of 1925, the founder of New Jersey Special Olymics.
Harold W. Eickhoff Outstanding First Year Student Award
Dr. Harold Eickhoff was the president of The College of New Jersey from 1980 to 1998 and was instrumental in developing and implementing the First Year Experience Program. The FYE Program integrates the curricular and the co-curricular experiences to assist first year students in their adjustment to college by introducing them to the four areas of the College’s vision: service, diversity, community, and excellence. This award honors the leadership that Dr. Eickhoff brought to the program recognizing a full time first year student, having completed no more than one semester, with a minimum grade point average of 3.0.
Elizabeth Allen Scholarship
This award honors Elizabeth A. Allen, an 1869 graduate of the New Jersey State Normal School at Trenton who was instrumental in the establishment of the Teachers Retirement Fund and Tenure of Office Act. First awarded in 1923 through a fund established by the New Jersey Society of Retired Teachers, it is presented to a full-time freshman, sophomore or junior in need of financial assistance who demonstrates worthiness of such assistance through high scholarship and value to the college.
Dorothy Taylor Haas Award
The Dorothy Taylor Haas Award was established by Mr. Charles A. Haas ’32 in memory of his wife Dorothy Taylor Haas ’31. It is presented to a graduating senior with a minimum 3.0 grade point average. The student must have demonstrated an extensive commitment to the College through his/her involvement with campus or community events during his/her undergraduate career. The award also recognizes strong leadership skills, character, and great promise for the future.
John Wandishin Scholarship
Established in 1994 by John Wandishin, a former Student Government Association president and student trustee, this scholarship award is presented to a student who exhibits the qualities of honor, courage, leadership, scholarship, and service. The purpose of the scholarship is to help those with the potential to make a positive contribution to The College of New Jersey community. This student may not necessarily receive great public attention but is making significant efforts in their current position using their available resources. The award keeps a campaign promise to return to the students the stipend received by the Student Government Association president.
Memorial Scholarship
The Memorial Scholarship was first awarded in 1960 from a fund created in memory of students and faculty members who lost their lives in a bus tragedy in October 1959. The award is presented to a student from any class year (freshman through senior) and is given for academic merit and need.
William M. Klepper Scholarship
Bill Klepper served Trenton State College/The College of New Jersey from 1971 to 1997, initially as Director of Housing and ultimately as Vice President for Student Life. The scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate student with a minimum 3.0 grade point average and is involved in campus programs, demonstrates academic achievement, and is active in at least one student organization, preferably in a leadership position.
Annie F. Stout 1879 and Kate Stout 1882 Scholarship
The Annie and Kate Stout Scholarship for Graduate Study has been awarded since 1931. Because of their commitment to education, sisters Annie (class of 1879, a member of the faculty at Lamberville High School), and Kate (class of 1882, a teacher at the State Normal School), established trust funds to help young men and women in good academic standing with a demonstrated need for financial assistance to pursue graduate study. Character and capability are considered.
All programming awards are for groups. Student organizations, athletic teams or residence hall staff groups interested in applying for one or more of the Programming Awards are asked to complete and submit the following form genie application. Applications are due Monday, March 24, 2008. Recipients will be notified on or about Thursday, April 10, 2008 and will officially receive recognition at the Student Leadership Awards on Sunday, April 27, 2008.

Excellence in Service
The Excellence in Service Award recognizes the most outstanding contributions made by a student organization, athletic team, or residence hall staff to the TCNJ community by developing and implementing a community service activity, civic engagement project or philanthropic endeavor that met or advanced the needs of the TCNJ or local community. A community service or civic engagement project is defined as one that does not raise money; a philanthropic activity is defined as one that does raise money.
Excellence in Advocacy
The Excellence in Advocacy Award recognizes the student organization, athletic team, or residence hall staff group that has raised TCNJ community awareness and inspired action through an outstanding program.
Excellence in Collaborative Programming
The Excellence in Collaborative Programming Award honors the student organizations, athletic teams or residence hall staff group who have taken an active role in co-sponsoring the most outstanding and most creative, educational, social, recreational or service based program for the TCNJ community.
Excellence in Diversity Award (formerly the Multicultural Programming Award)
The Excellence in Diversity Award recognizes the student organization, athletic team or residence hall staff group that planned and implemented the most outstanding program of a multicultural nature. This award is designed to recognize a program which emphasizes inclusivity and multicultural values and promotes the College’s commitment to the appreciation and enhancement of diversity.
Outstanding Student Program of the Year Award (formerly the Student Life Program Award)
The Outstanding Student Program of the Year Award recognizes the student organization, athletic team or residence hall staff group that planned and implemented the most outstanding program. The program should be of a lasting quality that continues to raise the College’s visibility to the greater community and unites members of the College in the spirit of community.
Leadership awards are for both individuals and groups. Applications are due Monday, March 24, 2008. Recipients will be notified on or about Thursday, April 10, 2008 and will officially receive recognition at the Student Leadership Awards on Sunday, April 27, 2008.
President’s Cup Award
In 1967, President Gillenwater inaugurated a program to encourage members of student organizations to improve their grade point averages by competing academically with one another. The President’s Cup is awarded annually to the student organization with the highest academic average.

Student Organization President/Team Captain of the Year Award
The Student Organization President/Team Captain of the Year Award recognizes an outstanding individual who publicly advanced the mission of his or her organization or athletic team while internally challenging and encouraging the membership to try new initiatives, acquire new skills and prepare the group for leadership transition and ongoing success.

Student Organization Adviser/Coach of the Year Award
The Student Organization Adviser/Coach of the Year Award recognizes an outstanding individual whose developmental and motivational contributions, made both publicly and privately, to members and officers alike inspires leadership, challenges thinking, encourages new ideas and initiatives, and empowers action.

Emerging Leader of the Year Award
The Emerging Leader of the Year Award recognizes an individual who has demonstrated leadership potential through significant contributions to her or his organization, team or staff group in their first year of membership.
