Student Life Awards' History

Elizabeth Allen Scholarship

This award honors Elizabeth A. Allen, an 1869 graduate of the NJ State Normal School at Trenton who was instrumental in the establishment of the Teachers Retirement Fund and Tenure of Office Act. First awarded in 1923 through a fund established by the NJ Society of Retired Teachers, it is presented to four students who demonstrate worthiness of such assistance through high scholarship and value to the college.

John Wandishin Scholarship

This scholarship is named after a past president of the Student Government Association at the College who successfully combined his work and leadership responsibilities with zeal and natural ability. It is given in keeping with John Wandishin’s promise to return to the students the stipend he received as SGA president. This award is presented to a student who exhibits the qualities of honor, courage, leadership, scholarship, and service with the aim of making a positive contribution to The College community.

Memorial Scholarship

The Memorial Scholarship was first awarded in 1960, from a fund created in memory of our students and faculty members who lost their lives in a bus tragedy in October of 1959. The award is given for academic merit and need.

Dorothy Taylor Haas Award

The Dorothy Taylor Haas Award was established by Mr. Charles A. Haas '32 in memory of his wife Dorothy Taylor Haas '31.  It is presented to a graduating senior who will have demonstrated an extensive commitment to the College through their involvement with campus and/or community events during their undergraduate career. The award also recognizes strong leadership skills, character, and great promise for the future.

William Klepper Scholarship for Outstanding Sophomore Student

Bill Klepper served Trenton State College/The College of New Jersey from 1971 to 1997 initially as Director of Housing and ultimately as Vice President for Student Life.  This scholarship is given to an undergraduate student with a minimum 3.0 grade point average and is active in student life programs, demonstrated academic achievement, and is active in at least one student organization, preferably in a leadership position. 

Wade Watkins '84 Scholarship

In honor of Wade Watkins, class of 1984, this scholarship was established by the Alumni Association.  It is presented to an undergraduate student not necessarily in a position of great public attention, but involved in student activities; makes a positive contribution to the campus; and exhibits the qualities of leadership, scholarship, service, and having fun in the process. 

Kate Stout Scholarship for Graduate Study

The Kate Stout Scholarship for Graduate Study have been awarded since 1934.  Because of her commitment to education, Kate (Class of 1882, a teacher at Trenton Normal School) established a trust fund to help young men and women pursue graduate study.

 

 


Other Awards

Outstanding Student Leader Award

This award is presented to the individual who has exhibited the most extraordinary leadership qualities in the past year at the College.

Harold W. Eickhoff Award for Outstanding First Year Student

Dr. Harold Eickhoff was the president of The College of New Jersey from 1980 to 1998 and was instrumental in developing and implementing the First Year Experience Program. The FYE Program integrates the curricular and the co-curricular to assist first year students in their adjustment to college by introducing them to the four areas of the College’s vision: service, diversity, community, and excellence.  This award honors the leadership that Dr. Eickhoff brought to the program by recognizing a first year student who has contributed to all aspects of The College’s vision.

President's Cup Award

In 1967, President Gillenwater inaugurated a program to encourage members of student organizations to improve their grade point averages by competing academically with one other. The President’s Cup is awarded annually to the campus organization with the highest academic average.
