Committee for Cultural and Intellectual Community (CCIC)
Programming Theme 2005-06
The Face of the Other is the theme for CCIC sponsored programs in 2005-06. As the war in Iraq and U.S. involvement in Afghanistan enter our lives through the mass media, the dominant culture here sees images and hears stories of the other--that is, people with unfamiliar customs and religious practices. Community Learning Day would explore and deconstruct the multiple meanings of what seems to the dominant culture as "the other." The other implies difference; it also implies a position from which this difference is observed and judged. Just as Iraqi and Afghan customs may seem "other" to U.S. students, American students reciprocally define otherness and difference to many Iraqis and Afghans. Community Learning Day also might explore otherness and difference within the U.S. as well as transnationally. Some customs that now seem strange to the West, originated there. For instance, Islamic laws that prevent prosecution of husbands who murder adulterous wives come from the 19th-century French penal code.
Community Learning Day will be held on Wednesday, October 12, 2005 , featuring Marjane Satrapi, nationally acclaimed author of Persepolis: The Story of A Childhood. In addition, faculty and first year students will explore this theme by reading and discussing Persepolis as part of the summer reading program.
The theme also will be investigated in a variety of academic and cultural programs offered by faculty and student groups throughout the 2005-06 academic year.
The theme has been developed to support programming that is already planned as well as encourage the development of new programs. As in years past, partial funding for such programs will be available from the CCIC. We invite individual community members, campus departments and student organizations to develop programs related to this theme. To apply for funding, please download the following CCIC program proposal format.
Several opportunities for involvement are available. They include working to develop Community Learning Day as well as submitting proposals for funding for programs related to the theme.
Finally, the CCIC welcomes suggestions for a Suggested Reading List to provide added voice and perspective to our investigation of the theme. This list will be shared with the campus community along with promotional materials for thematic programs next year
Please consider joining our efforts to support intellectual and cultural growth on our campus. We welcome your ideas and encourage your involvement in program planning.
