Student Life Services

Legal Services

The Office of Legal Services, located in the campus life area of the Brower Student Center (second floor), provides free legal advisement to all students at The College of New Jersey. The College retains a licensed attorney (NJ and PA) who is available to advise on matters such as municipal court and motor vehicle procedures, civil litigation, landlord-tenant disputes, small claims action, potential libel and slander matters, and outside contracts for student organizations. The office is also a resource center for legal information and programming on legal issues. The SGA vice president for legal and governmental affairs serves as a liaison between the off-campus attorney and students seeking legal services. Office hours are posted each semester and appointments with the attorney must be made in advance by phoning 609/771-2307.

Peer Advisory Services

Peer Advisory Services (PAS) was created by a group of concerned students through the SGA Legal and Governmental Affairs in order to assist peers who may not know where to go when confronting student issues and concerns. The mission of PAS is to improve the quality of The College's campus life as it is experienced by members of The College of New Jersey community, working with both a proactive and responsive manner to facilitate the resolution of problems. Through discussions with peer advisers, assistance or proper guidance will be given resulting in the steps necessary to reach each student's personal goals. These peer advisers believe that many of their peers are hesitant to seek professional advice. Therefore, the "student to student" environment provides a relaxing atmosphere, in order to convey the fact that others may share similar experiences to theirs. Our areas of specialty include, but are not limited to: alcohol/drugs, depression, discriminatory conflicts, domestic violence, harassment, and stress/time management. PAS is run by trained students, and everything is kept completely confidential. For more information about this service, please feel free to stop by our office, which is located on the second floor of the student center, or call us at 609/771-2307.
