Timothy Makaro's (Biology 2004) Excavated Fossil Sharks with Physics Professor Marty Becker
Timothy Makaro (Biology 2004) is now part of The College of New Jersey graduate program in the School of Education working on his MAT. This fall, with funding from the School of Science, he traveled to Arkansas with Dr. Martin Becker, Associate Professor of Physics, to excavate fossil sharks. He describes the outcome of his experience:
"The fossils that we were able to collect not only amazed my friends and family but I was actually able to utilize them in conjunction with my Internship I experience at Grace A. Dunn Middle School. I can not explain how excited these 6th grade students were to actually be holding and classifying fossilized sharks teeth that have been dated to approximately 70 thousand years old. That lesson was by far the most interesting and interactive lesson that I taught during my tenure there. When the lesson was finished I actually had three students tell me that they wanted to be fossil collectors when they grow up. Thank you for the chance to touch the lives of inner city youth and inspire a perhaps future generation of scientists."
