Physics Professor and Student Make Important Discovery
Dr. Thulsi Wickramasinghe and Tim Magee (senior physics major) attending the international conference on Neutron Stars and Gamma-Ray Bursts in Egypt recently, announced their discovery of a new mathematical relationship that can be used to estimate dark energy of the cosmos, using GRBs. Tim was one of only two undergraduates at the conference. Dr. Wickramasinghe became an International Astronomical Union Fellow, a lifetime honor.
Dr. Wickramasinghe will announce some of his results on "Particle Motions in Twisted Space Times in the Context of General Relativity" in the international conference on Frontiers of Physics in Nepal in June, 2009. NATO advanced study institute and Egyptian Academy of Science is organizing the conference. It is through them that Tim received funding in support of his attendance. He will also be a guest at the University of Katmandu. His work is funded entirely by a grant from the American Astrononomical Society.
