In high school I was always interested in mathematics and the sciences much more than I was interested in the humanities, but actually choosing a specific area of the sciences to focus on seemed like a daunting task. I was always fascinated by how the body worked and medicine, as well as mathematics. For this reason the Open Option Science program seemed like the perfect fit for my start to college. Whereas in other programs you are required to take certain classes each semester, I was able to choose my whole schedule myself, and I was able to enroll in the natural sciences classes that were of greatest interest to me. This was obviously not an unguided effort, as I was entered into a non-credit class called "Introduction to Science", where we had many guest speakers come and talk to us about the different majors and the vast number of careers stemming from these majors. I was also assigned an academic advisor whose field of expertise was in the sciences. I took full advantage of the opportunities of this program, taking a course in every discipline in the School of Science, and constantly asking my advisor questions about my broad range of scientific interests and her recommendations for how best to pursue these interests. I decided to apply to become a biology major because of my interests in molecular biology and medicine; however, I am still pursuing my interests in mathematics and other scientific disciplines. This summer I am doing research in molecular genetics/bioinformatics using biochemical and computational techniques. Having the opportunity to learn about such a variety of sciences has opened up the door for me in such interdisciplinary fields. In addition, my studies in the sciences have given me the academic background required to excel in this kind of program. Following graduation I hope to go to medical school and/or graduate school and to pursue research in these areas.
