Retrieving the ACADV Lessons
With the continued growth of the network, a series of lessons were created to allow you to become more familiar with the ACADV Network and its operation. To access the Lesson 1, send the following message to the listserv (listserv@listserv.nodak.edu):
get acadv lesson1
Make sure that you place this command as the first and only line of text in the body of the message! Once you have completed that lesson, you may then wish to request Lesson 2 by sending the following request:
get acadv lesson2
These lessons may be able to answer many of your questions about ACADV and its operation. Please feel free to contact Bill "Shoes" Johnson if you have any questions.
Retrieving the Membership List
Periodically, a membership list is prepared and stored on the network machine for ACADV members to access. In previous years, the list was distributed to all members when updated; however, because of the phenomenal growth of the network, this file has become HUGE! Fot this reason, we will provide these instructions to inform you about the process of retrieving this file. If you wish to obtain the most recent copy, send the following message to the listserv (listserv@listserv.nodak.edu) and place the following command as the first and only line of text in the body of the message:
get acadv members
Remember that the file is large, so be sure that your system can handle this process. If you encounter any problems in retrieving the membership list, please contact Bill "Shoes" Johnson.
Searching the Archives
This relatively new feature will allow members of ACADV to search the archives for previous messages on a particular topic. The process has been GREATLY simplified compared to the previous search program. To use this feature, you will need to complete the following steps:
1. Send your request to the listserv (listserv@listserv.nodak.edu)
2. Place the following line as the first and only line of text in the body of your message
search xxxxxx in acadv since yy/mm/dd
(where xxxxxx is the term you wish to search for. If it comes up with an error with
the date, try it without the date. You can change the date, but you must use the date
format listed above: year/month/day - for one digit numbers, include zeros, i.e. 95/01/07)
3. The network machine will send you a list of "hits" or matches, with each
message assigned a number.
4. You determine which message(s) you wish to read, and then you can order those specific
messages directly from the listserv. You will receive those messages from the machine
shortly. (NOTE: some of you will have a limit on the number of lines in a message, so you
will want to be very careful about ordering a significant number of messages at one time).
You will find this feature a valuable tool as an advisor and encourage you to use it. The network machine is programmed to give you further instructions once you have initiated the search routine. Again, if you have any problems, please feel free to contact Bill "Shoes" Johnson.
