Championship Memories

Celebration

HEY JUNE - Submitted by Michelle Carlson
We played the Regional Tourney flawlessly, beating Kean 9-0 to make it Dr. Walker's 11th trip to the NCAA Tournament, a trip was to Pella, IA. Coincidentally it was also Tulip Time in Pella. This meant the biggest tulip festival in the world. I have never seen so many tulips in my life. We wanted to pick some tulips as a memento, but there was a huge fine and June said she wasn't bailing any of us out of jail. As if the tulips were not enough, you should hav seen the hotel we stayed in called Dutch Mill Inn. There were windmills everywhere, psychedelic wallpaper, and nothing in the room matched, and the air conditioning in most rooms didn't work. We took the field looking for a National Championship. We had a great team, fabulous coach, and the Lion Mascot there cheering us on. Some of the alumni (Robin Payne, Jill Herman, Ann DeGannero) had made the trek out to Iowa with the huge Lion Mascot to cheer us on. Well it must have brought us good luck because we won the Championship 4-0 over Buena Vista. The highlight of the day was right after we got our gold trophies, we all went out to the mound, sat Dr. Walker down in a chair, and burst out with our rendition of "Hey June" (sung to the tune of "Hey Jude" by the Beatles). The song described June completely--from her southern drawl to her "peg leg" (broken ankle). In the end, all she said was "Thank you all for taking me along for the ride."

CLASSIC DR. WALKER - Submitted by Robin Payne
Donna Michael was THE All Everything this year. She hit with power and could play anywhere. We were to meet at the vans early one morning to get on the plane headed for the Nationals. Nobody was EVER late when the Bug said "be there". So, it's time to go and no Donna. Dr. Walker says, "OK, let's go." The entire team was in shock that Dr. Walker would leave without her. We did not speak the whole way to the airport. I guess she felt nobody was worth missing our flight. We are boarding the plane and here comes Donna running up and CRYING. We were all relieved that she made it. She was never late again. My question to the Alumni: what year was this?! Where did we place in this Nationals?
