Committee for Cultural and Intellectual Community (CCIC)
Religion, Culture and Identity is the theme for CCIC sponsored programs in 2007-08. Faculty and first year students will explore this theme by reading and discussing Dead Man Walking as part of the summer reading program. The theme also will be investigated in a variety of academic and cultural programs offered by faculty and student groups throughout the 2007-08 academic year. A complete list of these programs is available on the Religion, Culture and Identity Web site.
Community Learning Day will be held on Wednesday, October 3, 2007. Sister Helen Prejean from the Sisters of St. Joseph of Medaille will be speaking on the topic of morality and the death penalty. Sister Prejean is the noted social justice advocate, known particularly for her work against the death penalty. She is the author among other works, of Dean Man Walking, which was made into a major film starring Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn (1995), and more recently The Death of Innocents. Following the lecture, there will be a book signing and panel discussion.
12:00-1:30 PM LECTURE, Kendall Hall
1:30-2:00 PM BOOK SIGNING, Library Auditorium Lobby
2:00-3:30 PM PANEL DISCUSSION, Library Auditorium
The theme has been developed to support programming that is already planned as well as encourage the development of new programs. We invite individual community members, campus departments and student organizations to develop programs related to this theme. Campus Community members are also invited to participate in the development of Community Learning Day as well as other programs.
Finally, the CCIC welcomes suggestions for a Suggested Reading List to provide added voice and perspective to our investigation of the theme. This list will be shared with the campus community along with promotional materials for thematic programs next year.
Please consider joining our efforts to support intellectual and cultural growth on our campus. We welcome your ideas and encourage your involvement in program planning. To serve on the CCIC or Community Learning Day Committee please contact Celia Chazelle, chazelle@tcnj.edu or Robert Anderson, randerso@tcnj.edu.
Thank you.
