Committee for Cultural and Intellectual Community (CCIC)

Programming Theme 2003-2004

The Committee for Cultural and Intellectual Community (CCIC) is pleased to announce The Arts and Social Responsibility as the theme for 2003-2004 academic year. As you may remember, last fall the committee issued a call for suggestions to develop a theme. We are grateful for the many excellent suggestions we received.

The Arts and Social Responsibility offers the campus community the opportunity to explore a variety of complex questions about the role of the arts in local, national, and global contexts. This theme is particularly relevant in our region. Consider recent events such as the controversy surrounding New Jersey's poet laureate, Amiri Baraka; the Governor's proposed cuts to arts funding; and the selection of Daniel Libeskind's architectural design for rebuilding the former World Trade Center site. We hope this theme will engender these and other timely points of inquiry, such as: What is art and who decides? Must art be socially responsible? What is social responsibility and who decides? What is the relationship between aesthetics and politics? What is the responsibility of a democracy to the arts? What is the relationship between art and ownership? How is technology changing the nature and role of the arts?

The Arts and Social Responsibility will serve as the focus for Community Learning Day on Wednesday, October 15, 2003 and guide the selection of a Summer Reading for first year students. In addition, it will serve as the basis for a series of academic and cultural programs offered by faculty, student, and staff organizations throughout the 2003-2004 academic year. The CCIC has developed this theme to support relevant programming that is already planned and to encourage the creation of new programs. As in years past, partial funding for such programs will be available from the CCIC.

The CCIC invites campus departments, student organizations, and individual community members to develop programs related to this theme. We also seek individuals to be directly involved in the planning and implementation of Community Learning Day.

Finally, the CCIC welcomes suggestions for a Suggested Reading List to provide added voice and perspective to our investigation of the theme. This list will be shared with the campus community along with promotional materials for thematic programs next year

Please consider joining our efforts to support intellectual and cultural growth on our campus. We welcome your ideas and encourage your involvement in program planning.
