HON-347:Paris Before the Great War - An Exploration of Modernism in Art & Literature

4 credit hours (1 academic unit)

Liberal Learning: "Literary, Visual and Performing Arts"

Interested in spending three weeks in Paris studying how this magnificent city came into its own as an international center for avant-garde art, architecture, and literature?

This course will take place in Paris and use the city as the classroom. We will look at the magnificent buildings and bridges, and visit the actual paintings and sculptures that made Paris Paris in the years 1890 to 1914.  We also will read the texts and explore the haunts and habitats of writers and artists who escaped the provincialism of their native milieus to experience the freedom and cosmopolitanism of this artistic Mecca.

Paris Before the Great War is open to any major and all Honors students. It meets the general education requirement for VPA. Special foci are available for students who wish to count the class for Women’s and Gender Studies. Graduate students may take the course as an independent study.

This 3-week course will be taught in and around the city of Paris. The program will combine classroom time with site visits to monuments, museums, and art collections. Students will also partake in 3 one-day excursions to Fontainbleau/Vaux-le-Vicomte, Chartres/Giverny and Versailles.

Students can expect to be engaged in course and trip-related activities almost every day of the program. It will be an exciting and academically demanding learning experience, but also one that will engage and challenge the students on many levels as well as encourage exploration of the city around them.

Students will be traveling with ACCENT, an international education organization that works with over 50 American colleges and universities to provide high quality study abroad programs. ACCENT students come from all over the U.S. and represent a wide range of ages, education levels and academic interests. For more information on the ACCENT Paris Center, visit their website at: http://accentintl.com/paris/

Housing:

Housing will be offered as double occupancy rooms in the Cite Universitaire or similar student residences for the duration of the program. Exact housing placements will be given to student apon arrival.

A suppliment of $250 will be charged for a single room in a student residence, when available and if desired. Single rooms are limited in their availability.
