Southwestern Women's & Gender Studies Association

An Affiliate of the Southwestern Social Science Association

The Southwestern Women's and Gender Studies Association (SWGSA) emerged in 2004 from the Women's Caucus of the Southwestern Social Science Association (SSSA), which had actively promoted leadership for women in the SSSA since 1971.  This change allows us to incorporate a broader mission of promoting the academic study of women's and gender studies as well as the more activist purposes of the Women's Caucus founders.  We operate as an affiliate of the SSSA (along with economics, geography, history, international studies, political science, social work, and sociology).  The SSSA is the oldest interdisciplinary social science organization in the United States, with a current membership of about 1200 academics, students, activists, and practitioners, drawn principally from the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas (although increasing numbers are drawn from elsewhere in the U.S. and abroad).  As an affiliate of the SSSA, the SWGSA organizes an annual conference in March and helps produce the Social Science Quarterly. In 2009, our conference will be held in Denver, Colorado. In 2010, we hope to visit downtown Houston, TX.
