Spring 2007

Windows XP Upgrade

Starting May 21, Information Technology will be completing the upgrade of our our campus standard operating system from Windows 2000 to Windows XP. All offices, classrooms, and lab computers will be receiving the upgrade to the new system. As a precaution against losing any of your data, we will make an exact copy of your computer on our secure network before we begin the upgrade. If you discover that you can not find a certain file on your newly imaged workdstation, don't panic. First, try to search for the file on your computer by going to Start, Search, For Files/Folders and typing in whatever part of the filename you know. If you still can't find what you're looking for, call the Help Desk and let them know what you are missing. Please note that you will need to reinstall any software that you have installed on your own, including downloads from the internet. Your support specialist will notify you about one week before we begin the upgrade for your department. If you have any questions, feel free to contact your support specialist via email.

Introducing NetStorage

Information Technology would like to announce a new service called NetStorage that allows you to access your Novell Netware files using a standard web browser. This service allows easy, point-and-click access to your standard drives; for example H: (home directory drive), S: (shared departmental drive), and L: (lab data drive). You may find this service to be more convenient and easier to use than the FTP service. FTP service will remain available for those who prefer it.

If you are trying to access the service from off-campus, it will alert you that you must be connected to the campus network before you can continue. You can do this by either connecting to the network via a dial-up connection, or you can SSLVPN in to the network. Once you are connected, you can access the NetStorage login page or the instructions for its use.

Social Bookmarking

You can take advantage of free social bookmarking systems to store useful Internet resources and share them with your colleagues. You organize these resources with user-defined keywords (e.g. tags). Most systems will allow you to search for bookmarks by tags and popularity. Bookmark lists sometimes offer a more refined way to find applicable resources than search engines. Some systems even offer ratings, commenting, the ability to import and export, add notes, reviews, email links, automatic notification, feed subscription, web annotation, groups, and social networks.

Microsoft Office Upgrade

At the same time that the campus computers are upgraded to Windows XP, we will also be converting everyone from Office 2000, the current standard, to the new Office 2007. This office suite includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access. Front Page, the Office webpage building program, is no longer available from MicroSoft. We will, instead, be switching to a new Office product called Microsoft Expression Web.

Email and Calendaring Systems Under Review

Information Technology is in the process of reviewing email and calendaring systems to replace our current email server and Meeting Maker with a single integrated system.  Also included will be an enhance webmail interface.  IT hopes to complete its evaluation in May so that a new solution can be installed and ready for the fall semester.  Stay tuned for more information!

What do I do with old Printer Ink/Toner?

During our printer upgrade projects, we often receive questions about what offices can do with unused ink/toner for the printers we're removing. Office Max, our office supply contract holder, has a process by which they will pickup/collect used ink and toner cartridges for recycling. Departments can contact Office Max Customer Support at 800-472-6473 to arrange a pickup of used cartridges. If the ink/toner was purchased through Office Max, Credit will be applied to the accounts based upon the shelf life of the ink/toner returned. The Office Max delivery team will also take other (non Office Max) opened, partially used ink/toner back for recycling.
