On Monday, January 27 2003 UPE had its first meeting of the Spring 2003 semester. Here are the minutes from this meeting: We discussed our plans for the upcoming semester. As we talked about last semester, there will be a program for high school girls. The title of this program will be "Divas With Keyboards - Girls Get Connected With Computers". This will take place on Saturday, March 29. As it stands now however we are getting a low response rate so will have to step up our efforts to bring people in. We are also having the other high school program focusing on computer architecture. This will be called "What's Inside". This is scheduled for Saturday, March 1. We also have some pressing business we need to attend to. First and foremost we are going to start up a department newsletter. During the meeting people gave ideas for what should be in the newsletter and then we assigned different tasks to each person. Here is the list for what we all signed up for: Note from the chair - Karl Student Awards - Emily Internship Highlights - Mark Dane Current Research of faculty/students - Jessie Introduce the faculty (Prof. Komagata) - Chris New Lab Pic - Emily Spotlight on a student - Brian Tech news - John and Brian Plea for money - Dr. Knox John Arrabito volunteered to do the layout for the newsletter. Everyone needs to do their work independently and then email the work to Emily at gibson2@tcnj.edu. Email her by next Monday. Another event coming up is the welcome back night we are having for the computer science students next Monday. It will be next Monday at 8pm in HH 253. We are going to have food and here is what people agreed to bring: Emily is going to order the pizza. The plan is to start with 4 pies. Aaron is going to get plastic cups, paper plates, napkins, 1 bottle of ginger ale, 2 bottles of sprite, 2 cokes, and 2 pepsi's. Maria and Chris are going to get snacks like chips and cookies. We also talked about what we are doing for FACTS this semester. The plan is to do tutorial-like presentations. For example if you or someone you know is really good at PERL, ask them to come to FACTS to present. We also would like to have a debate during FACTS to really get our collective computer science juices going. We talked about a potential operating systems debate. In any case, we need presenters and we also need people to host FACTS since Emily has class from 330 till 5 on Fridays. If you could help out in any way, send Emily an email at gibson2@tcnj.edu
