MINUTES -- UPE Thursday, Feb. 6 ************************************************************************ * JUST A REMINDER... * * * * These minutes, as well as all of the minutes of the past meetings, * * can be found on the web at http://www.tcnj.edu/~upe!!! * * * ************************************************************************ PRETZEL SALES We will be having our first pretzel sale on Thursday, Feb. 20 in Forcina Hall. We still need people to sign up for half-hour time slots, especially later in the day from around 3 to 6. If you can help out, please email us! Joe will be calling up the pretzel salesman and ordering the pretzels, Brad will be getting the condiments (so get some mustard packets and napkins at the commons as often as you can and bring them to Brad!!!!), LJ will be getting the table reservation and Jim will handle the money. Hopefully, this will be a big success and we'll raise some major cash for UPE! INDUCTION We are currently compiling a list of next semester's new inductees. Beverly Dash (the secretary in the Computer Science department) promises to have the list compiled by our next meeting. In this way, we will be able to have the inductees attend our March 6 meeting and then have the induction ceremony on Monday, March 10 at 8:00. Once again, it will be held at Dr. Wolz's house (by her gracious permission) and parents are invited. ELECTIONS Because three of the four executive board members are graduating this semester, we will be having elections next meeting for the positions of President, Vice President and Secretary. If you would like to run or vote for one of these positions, you must attend the next meeting and be prepared to give a brief little speech about why you want the position, your background in leadership positions, etc. ALUMNI AFFAIRS According to Anne Martens, our Award Fund letter was sent out before our last meeting, and it looked great! As a follow-up, we will be having a Phone-a-Thon the week of March 3rd. We need everyone to sign up for AT LEAST one two-hour time slot (either 6:00 to 8:00pm or 7:00 to 9:00pm, Monday through Thursday) to be able to quickly and efficiently call all of the recipients of the letter and confirm their donations. Thursday's time slots will conflict with our regular meeting, but if we get moving, we will have finished all of the calling before then anyway. MEMBERSHIP FEES We are still waiting on a few new inductees to pay their membership fee of $25 in the form of a check payable to Deborah Knox. Please drop off your check with Dr. Knox personally - do not drop it off in her mailbox - and get it in as soon as possible! SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS If anyone is planning on applying for the UPE scholarships that were mentioned in last meeting's minutes, please contact UPE. We are only permitted to submit one undergraduate and one graduate application, so we must vote to choose which members will apply. TREASURER'S REPORT Jim, our newly appointed treasurer, went with LJ to a training session last week on how to be a treasurer. He found out that since we are a new club, we don't have a budget yet. Jim will be filling out a New Budget Club Request Form and submitting it to the Student Finance Board for approval. At that time, we will be allotted a small base budget for publicity and office supplies. We are allowed to keep all of the money that we make on fundraising and use it whenever and however we choose. But, the money from the SFB is specific to their approval and time constraints. Hopefully by next semester we will have a bigger budget and be able to do more fun things! BRAINSTORMING One section of the budget request form asks for a list of all of the activities and plans that the club has. We came up with the following ideas: certificates/plaques for Award Fund recipients, alumni dinners, field trips, honor stoles for graduations, ads in the Signal, sending someone to the national UPE conference each year, and having a game tournament in the lab after hours. Feel free to email us with any comments or additional suggestions or ideas you might have!
