MINUTES -- UPE Thurs. March 6 Everyone, LJ was not able to attend last night's meeting, so our newly-inducted president, Dave Watkins, ran the meeting. Here's what went on... NEW INDUCTEES Our first order of business was to welcome our new inductees into UPE and tell them about what we've been up to for the past semester. For those of you who weren't at the meeting, some of our recent activities included: a pretzel sale in Forcina Hall in which we sold out all of the pretzels and made a whopping $50, a phone-a-thon that we had in Bliss Hall earlier this week (which will be explained in detail later in this message), and a GRE fund raiser that we'll be having this Sunday (also explained later). MEMBERSHIP FEE All new inductees are required to pay a $25 membership fee to become a part of our organization. Please pay by cash or check (payable to Dr. Knox) and personally deliver it to Dr. Knox. Thanks!!! PHONE-A-THON Our much-anticipated Phone-a-Thon was held this week from Monday to Wednesday in the basement of Bliss Hall. We called all CS alumni and raised over $1650 (Dr. Knox single-handedly raised over $1000!). It was a lot of fun and we had a pretty good turnout. Of this money, approximately $200 will go to our award fund (our negotiated 12.5%) and the rest will go to Alumni Affairs and Dean Kamber. Dr. Knox sent a memo to the dean the other day boldly requesting that he give us his entire 12.5%, but no response was initiated yet! Thanks again to everyone who participated! INDUCTION CEREMONY The induction ceremony for this semester will be held THIS Monday, March 10, at 8:00pm at Dr. Wolz's house. Directions are at the bottom of this page. Everyone is encouraged to attend and bring their parents and/or loved ones. If you are coming, please email either UPE or LJ and let us know how many people are coming with you (try to keep it between 3 or 4 guests max). The professors will be supplying the food and beverages, the attire is "business casual" (basically, no jeans and sneakers, but NOT suits and gowns!!), and it should run about an hour. So, please come out and participate - it'll be a lot of fun! GRE FUND RAISER This Sunday, March 9th, at 10am, we will be holding a GRE Practice Test in Forcina Hall 134. Princeton Review is basically taking care of the whole process, from proctoring to grading and such, and it costs $3.00. We get half of this money, while the Computer Science Club gets the other half. Currently, we have about 150 people signed up, so it should prove to be a huge success! Joe and Mark graciously volunteered to wake up super-early and collect the money from 9:30 till 10:30, so thanks guys! TREASURY REPORT Jim Richvalsky gave us a basic overview of our money situation. It breaks down like this: from the SFB budget, we have $10 for office supplies and $36 for publicity; from our fundraising efforts, we have $15 from the last GRE test we ran, $57.50 from the pretzel sales, and a forecasted $225 from Sunday's GRE test. The SFB money must be spent by the end of the semester or it is lost, so we need to figure out how we're going to use that. The rest of the money will go toward stoles for graduation and possibly a picnic for the whole CS department at the end of the year. If you have any suggestions, let us know. NEXT YEAR'S BUDGET Jim submitted next year's budget to SFB this week and it is currently pending review and approval from them. We requested approximately $200 for speakers, and the basic amount for publicity and office supplies. Keep your fingers crossed... GRADUATION For those of you who are graduating in May (YEAH!!), we need to have a count as to who's walking so we can figure out how many stoles we need and stuff. So, email UPE or LJ with that info. ANNOUNCEMENTS * The next Java Klatch will meet on Wednesday, March 12th in HH 253 at 4:00pm. * Dr. Knox has announced an excellent opportunity for any junior interested in a summer industrial research program. If you haven't received email from her about it, let her know. It's a great chance to earn some incredible experience. Act now - the application is due VERY SOON!! NEXT MEETING Our next meeting will be held on Thursday, March 27th at 7:00pm in Holman Hall 252. We will be discussing how we will apportion the Phone-a-Thon money for the CS awards.
