MINUTES -- UPE Thurs. March 27 Everyone, Last night's meeting was very long and eventful, so please read through this and get up to date with what's been going on. Remember, these minutes are also on the web at http://www.tcnj.edu/~upe, so if you would rather read them in that format, go right ahead! MEMBERSHIP FEES All new inductees have paid their membership fees (thanks!), so we have sent the money to UPE headquarters and your certificates should be coming before the end of the year. Let's keep our fingers crossed on that one. SCHOLARSHIP CANDIDATE We have selected Dave Watkins, our newly-elected president, as the candidate to represent us in the national UPE scholarship competition. Go Dave! PHONE-A-THON Grrrrrrrrrrrrreat news on the Phone-a-Thon tip - Dr. Knox asked the Dean for his 12.5% of the money we raised and he said "YES"! Go, Dr. Knox! So, that means that we get 25% of the total, which is estimated at $1650. Unfortunately, that money isn't ours yet - it is just what people proposed they would donate. So, we don't get it right now. On Wednesday, there is a faculty meeting at which Dr. Knox is going to ask for about $300 of the money up front so we can have something to give out in the form of awards. Other than that, it will go toward next year's fund. PICNIC FUN With the gracious help of the Computer Science Club (thanks to Christine and Dave for coming to our meeting as reps), we will be having an end-of-the-year picnic for the entire CS department! With a lot of debate, we finally decided on Wednesday, April 23rd from 12-5 as a tentative goal date, with Wednesday, April 30th as a rain date. We are currently looking into where we could have it - some people are voting for on-campus and some for off - so we'll let you know the specifics as they come about. Right now, we are trying to come up with events that we could have (we proposed faculty/student games like volleyball!) and food that we need, etc. The CS club is going to advertise via email and the Signal, so we're covered that way. But, we still need your help! Please email any suggestions, comments, etc. It's gonna be a great opportunity to get together as an entire department and do some real fun (NON-COMPUTER) stuff! Also, the awards that we've raised money for are going to be handed out then, too. So, mark your calendar now and start thinking of cool ideas... GRE FUND RAISER We had a 50% attendance rate of those people who signed up, so that was good. We ended up clearing $108, the other half of which went to the CS Club. YEAH! If anyone feels like organizing another GRE fund raiser, let LJ know... TREASURY REPORT Okay, so here's the deal. We still have $46 from SFB for office supplies and publicity. We are going to use that in the following way: $10 for binders, etc. and $36 for a 3"x5" Signal ad to announce our picnic. The other money we have is from fundraising - $195.50. After much debate, we decided to get honor cords for all of the graduating seniors (at $12 each + shipping & handling) and let the CS Club pay for the picnic. They're so nice... SPRING DAY Sunday, April 13th is Spring Day. This is the day when all high-school seniors who are admitted to TSC come to visit and we try to woo them into coming here. As part of this day, the students go to their prospective major and we dazzle them with fancy programs and projects. This is where you come in. We need people to woo and dazzle between 10am and 3pm that day, as well as people to just talk about what it's like to be a CS major. As of now, only 18 h.s. students have been accepted into our major, and that is REALLY low! So, we have to try to get all of them to come or else we face the possibility of our major going to the dogs! Come out and support your great department!!!!! ANNOUNCEMENTS * The International Upsilon Pi Epsilon page has been updated to link to our chapter's page. We have a link to theirs on our page. Their page is at: http://www.cs.purdue.edu/upe/upe-main.html. Check it out! * The next Java Klatch will meet on Wednesday, April 9 in HH253 at 4:00pm. NEXT MEETING Our next meeting will be held in HH252 at 7:00pm on Thursday, April 10th, unless otherwise notified through email. Please come out - we have a lot to talk about! And, for those of you who missed last night's meeting, you missed a good one - Dr. Knox brought a whole basket of Easter candy including Marshmallow Bunnies! YEAH! Have a great Easter and we'll see you on the 10th... :)
