MINUTES -- UPE Thurs. April 24 SPRING DAY 1997 Last Sunday was Spring Day 1997, in which incoming freshman visit the school to make their final decision as to whether or not to come to TSC. Thanks to everyone who volunteered to demonstrate projects, give talks, etc., because we actually DOUBLED our enrollment from 18 to 36! Their checks are due by May 1st, so let's hope that everyone who said they were coming in as a Comp Sci major actually is! THE PICNIC Well, the picnic went off virtually hitch-free this Wednesday from 12 to 5pm. There was a nice turnout, despite the drizzly weather, and we had some burgers and hot dogs and played volleyball. The awards were given out and we even had a computer-shaped pinata filled with candy! Thanks to everyone who came out - we hope to have an even bigger success with it next year! And a special thanks to Dr. Neff for his volleyball follies. It made it all worth while! PHONE-A-THON There were thirty-seven alumni contributors to our phone-a-thon this year, one of them contributing a whopping $350! Eighteen people have paid and the other nineteen are due by June 1st. Thanks to Joe Kelly and Dave Watkins for volunteering to write thank you notes to all of the contributors and remind the ones who haven't paid to do so. HONOR CORDS The honor cords that the graduating seniors will be wearing this year were handed out at the meeting. Anyone who was not there, please see Dr. Knox before graduation to get your cord. Remember, you still have the opportunity to purchase yours to keep for only $12. Otherwise, cords will be collected at the departmental ceremony on graduation day. TREASURY REPORT Surprisingly enough, we actually have money LEFT OVER from this year! The picnic cost us a mere 12 bucks, that going toward cups, napkins, cheese, etc. The CS Club picked up the tab for the hot dogs and hamburgers and the candy-filled pinata, and Dr. Wolz took care of the charcoal and lighter fluid. So that leaves us with $59.78 of our own fundraising money to be carried over to next year! Good job, guys! Also, Jim spent the $10 on office supplies at the bookstore and got some nice things for next year's exec board. NEXT YEAR For those of you returning to UPE next year (not me - YEAH!), Dave Watkins will be your new president. LJ handed over her presidential duties on Thursday (thanks for doing a great job as President, LJ!) and here's what Dave had to say... A lot of the same things which were done this year in the form of fundraising will be continued next year, such as the practice GRE tests, the pretzel sales, and the phone-a-thon. Also to be continued are the picnic, the buying of honor cords, and the bi-yearly inductions (one in each semester) with one ceremony in the spring. Other suggestions included: some kind of get-together with the alumni (possibly an Alumni Affairs-funded career day), a speaker (possibly on the subject of graduate schools), and a trip to certain schools (maybe Carnegie Mellon?). The preliminary meeting time for next semester will be Tuesday at 8pm in HH252, probably the second week of school. Dave will let you know next semester the exact date via email. Good luck to him and the rest of UPE next year! ANNOUNCEMENTS * Good luck to Dave Watkins on his UPE scholarship application. He's still working on it and we hope it all works out! * CONGRATULATIONS to all graduating members - LJ Caruso, Erick Clavijo, Jen Giordano, Mike Krantz, April Ullery, Ed Paul, John Pharo, Kevin Vreeland, Dan Domen, David Meister, Dave Marcin, Brian Eppert and Mitchiko Sistek. Keep in touch with UPE - wherever you are!! And UPE, don't forget to keep in touch with the alumni! SPECIAL THANKS A special thanks goes out to our wonderful advisor, Dr. Knox, for going above and beyond the call of duty for UPE and being the only faculty advisor who attends every meeting! (Bearing goodies, too!) We hope you will remain with UPE next year and help keep up the fast track we're on now. Well, I guess that's it for me. It was a great year and I wish everyone luck in their endeavors. Good luck with the rest of the school year and have a great summer!! :)
