MINUTES - UPE Tuesday, September 23rd, 1997 Our second meeting of the year proves that UPE is very involved this year as we have many activities/fundraisers planned. Here are the minutes from our second meeting. First of all, congratulations to our new inductees!! It's great to have you in our fine organization and we're happy to see those who came to the meeting. If you missed it, make sure you come to our next meeting. The new inductees are: Daniel Barbalace Philip Beasley Clay Benoit Gregory Bronevetsky George Drayer Tim Ferguson Erik Gorka Karl Kliokis David Nardone Richard Psota Xiaoying Wen Leon Westenberger We informed the new inductees of events we've done in the past for UPE and things we plan in the future. New inductees will be getting a formal invitation to UPE soon. - Phone-A-Thon Meredith Murray from Alumni Affairs came to our meeting to help us plan for the Phone-A-Thon. She was a big help last year and helped us raise lots of cash for the CS department. We plan on having the Phone-a-thon this year on November 10th and 11th. These dates are a Monday and a Tuesday. We're probably going to have two shifts for both nights: one from 6-8pm and the other 7-9pm. We hope everyone will be able to take a shift at least one (or both!) of the nights. Formal signups will be done at an upcoming meeting. Joe, Dave, and Dave will be working on a letter to send to CS alumni informing them of the upcoming phone-a-thon. Meredith will be coming to the meeting before the phone-a-thon to give us some training on proper phone-a-thon techniques. We want to have an Alumni Event this year, but since we're so busy this semester we plan on having it next semester. Not sure exactly when, but most likely a weeknight. Meredith informed us Alumni Affairs will contribute funding for this event. - Practice GRE The UPE sponsored GRE test was a success! 87 people attended and we raised a total of $261 dollars! - Guest Speakers Several UPE members decided to volunteer to help look for potential speakers to bring to speak to the CS department. ACM has a list of speakers grouped according to region on their web page. We'd appreciate any input from UPE members on what kind of speaker to get. You can find the list at Http://www.acm.org/top/lect.html Either e-mail Dave Watkins any ideas you have, or bring them up at the next UPE meeting! - Pretzel Sale We still do not have a date for the pretzel sale. Dave called to make the proper reservation, but they have not called back, but it will be in October. Joe is going to contact the pretzel salesman, Jim will purchase condiments and handle the money, and Dave will make sure our reservation goes through. We will need people to sell pretzels the day of the sale. Also, we need a toaster oven to heat the pretzels. Anyone have one we can use for the day? Contact Dave soon! - Beyond Graduation We plan on having a "Beyond Graduation" panel presented by last year's graduates. Graduates will talk about the transition from college to work, job finding, and other things about their lives since graduation. This will probably take place the end of October. We are contacting CS graduates to invite them to come. - Announcements Graduate and Professional School Admissions Day Thursday, October 16, Brower Student Center, room 202 CONGRATULATIONS to our UPE President, Dave Watkins. Dave received a National UPE Scholarship which is funded by Microsoft. Way to go Dave! The next meeting will be held in Holman Hall 253 at 8:00pm on Tuesday, October 7th. Hope to see EVERYONE there!
