1. The Girls Highschool Outreach program is going to happen in March 2004. The program from last year can be located at www.tcnj.edu/~outproj -- In addition to the program from last year we are going to be adding a more in depth look at Computer Science. This is going to include things the girls may face Freshman year if they go on to major in C.S. A Java program (from Hello World to fun with for loops) is needed. -- Program went well last year, but some girls were more advanced than others. For designing own webpage aspect, we will teach the more advanced girls how to embed Java into their web page. This way since they are all working on the same project (the web page) the girls that are not quite as skilled will not feel left out. -- If we decide to include a look into Photoshop, Mike Montalto-Rook would be able to help out. -- Decided a new name was needed because we did not like Divas With Keyboards. A suggestion was the simpler Women and Computing. -- The team in charge of this so far is Jesse (president), Chris, Mike, Aaron, John King, two girls that Mike recruited, and hopefully Julia White. If you are in UPE you should be sitting on a committee. Email me at cirone2@tcnj.edu to tell me if you want to sit on the Girls committee. 2. The architecture program materials from last year is on Dan "Sweet Action" Ricart's account. Dan, please email material to Mark Dane (dane2@tcnj.edu) so he can post to UPE account. -- all the computers we had from last year are being stored in the Intel lab back room. They are in good condition and we will be able to take them apart and put them back together, just as we did last year. -- program need to be beefed up, to do this we plan on teaching the kids how to network the computers together, and how to install Linux. --need to work on getting a hub for the networking, get proper cables, and get tables to actually work on. -- to add to the power point slides, we want to talk about 64 bit computing. -- the members of the architecture committee include Dan Ricart (chair) Ben, Mark S., Chris D., and Keith. Again, if you would like to sit on this committee, email cirone2@tcnj.edu 3. We are trying to get as many people as possible to go to Matrix 3 at the IMAX thearte. Its on Saturday, November 15 at 4pm. If you want to go, meet outside the Student Center ATM's at 2:15. It would be wise to buy tickets online at https://www.fandango.com/ticket_box_office.asp?movie_title=The+Matrix+Revolutions%3A+The+IMAX+Experience&barcode_flag=0&theater_pkey=2722&row_count=895288006&chain_id=REGL&theater_id=AAOQP%5FLIVE&rating=R&genre=Action%2CScience+Fiction&mv=80394 Tickets are $11.50 a piece. 4. There is also an open house for Saturday November 15. We need people to help represent C.S. so PLEASE email me if you can make one of these time periods: 1:45- 3:15 Brower Student Center to help answer questions. 3:30 - 4:30 Holman 123 to demonstrate your work/answer questions/give tour So far, only Dan Ricart has agreed to help with the 1:45-3:15 time period. 5. Chevy's fundraiser is on Tuesday November 18. The event is all day, whether its 3pm or 10pm, if you can go there to eat and say you are there for UPE, we would apprecite it. Chris is picking up people behind T/W at 6:30. We need more drivers for this time! Please email me! We also want to make formal announcements to students in class during Monday and Tuesday classes. If we can get class schedules, I will email you all and ask you take one class, and get there 5 minutes early, and intrduce yourself and UPE, and ask for participation at Chevys event. 6. With the leftover food from the picnic, we will be having a FOOD and FACTS party on Friday November 21 at 3:00. It is the week before Thanksgiving break, so more people should be on campus. Plus, the Holman Cart people leave early on Friday. Mike Montalto Rook will things prepared (grill heated up) outside Holman by Bio Building around 2:30. Any volunteers free at this time would be highly appreciated. Food will be ready by 3, and this will slide nicely into John King's FACTS presentation on quantum computing at 3:30 in HH253. Fliers are already up. Talk it up to your friends UPE! More details about food will be discussed on next meeting (which will be next Wednesday, because the Chevy's event will be on Tuesday). 7. For a community service event, we thought a good idea would be to volunteer at a Senior Center to teach them the basics of the Internet and email. We think Emily Gibson volunteered at a local place doing this, we will contact her for more details. This event will probably take place next semester.
