MINUTES -- UPE Tuesday, Nov.12 E-MAIL -- We received a few email messages this week from various members of the group informing us of some fundraising suggestions. Michiko suggested a bake sale, while Kathy said that pretzel selling is a really great idea. We're still working on the details of those activities, and hopefully we'll get to buy our pins and graduation stoles soon! INDUCTION -- We will soon begin the process of selecting this semester's inductees into UPE. Selection is based upon grade point average in the major and a student's standing as a junior or senior. We plan to have the informal fall semester induction the second week of December, while the formal spring semester induction ceremony at Dr. Wolz's house will still be sometime in April. JOB FAIR -- Mike mentioned that there will be a job fair on Thursday, November 21st from 10-3 in the Student Center. All are encouraged to go, as graduation is quickly upon many of us! Also, it was noted that Career Services has been urging our department to send more candidates on job interviews through them, as the interest of cs majors has been less than expected. So, go get a job!! DR. KNOX -- Graced with her presence for the first time this year, Dr. Knox offered some sage advice for us. Her main concern is for the establishment of a scholarship fund which will be used to provide awards to Computer Science students each year. Her idea is to conjure up alumni and industry support to fund this project, but it will take a lot of effort on our part to do so. First off, we have a list of all of the Computer Science alumni from TSC since 1964, the members of UPE since 1988, and the various companies which explicitly hire cs students from TSC. We came up with a plausible starting list - alumni from 1986 to 1996 and local companies - with which we will begin to work. Dr. Knox has volunteered to go to Community Development to find out if we can get funding to mail out letters of solicitation to these people using the college's money (since we have NONE!). What we need everyone in UPE to do is to come up with some ideas for what we could write in such a letter and whom we should send these letters to. If anyone feels so inclined, he/she may feel free to write the letter in its entirety! We will be looking forward to everyone's contribution. In addition, we are considering putting together a revised list of places of student employment by cs majors. We will be asking everyone to email UPE with their place of employment and the name and number of a helpful contact. NEXT MEETING -- Our next meeting will be Tuesday, November 26th at 8:00 in Holman 107. Please make every effort to attend, as we will be drafting the final version of the alumni solicitation letter! Also, Dr. Knox has promised to bring us food! YEAH!! See you then. Have a nice day! :)
