Minutes from 11/13/02 meeting: As you know, UPE is trying to set up two different seminars during the spring 2003 semester. The first one is a co-ed architecture seminar and the other is a recruitment of high school girls seminar. In this past Wednesday's meeting we broke up into two seperate groups, one architecture group and o H.S. girls group. I was in the H.S. girls committee, but Frank was kind enough to send me an email detailing what the architecture committee discussed, so here that is: 1) The arch commitee that met at yesterday's meeting consists of the following people: Frank, Karl, Dan, Chris D., Mark, Ben, Steve, and Aaron We decided that next semester on any saturday, possibly the last one in feb., would be a good day for the arch. presentation. We would like to ask 15-20 students because anymore would hinder the presentation more than anything else. The perfect candidates would be 2 or 3 of the top computer students from 7 or 8 local schools. As for the letter to be sent, we are developing it through corresponding emails and as soon as our final copy is made we will send it to you for approval. Basically, we would like to first gain an understanding of what they know. Hopefully, it's more than basic and we can them go into an explanation of the various parts a computer while displaying each part. We figure that this can take up a morning session from roughly 10-12. Then there would be a break for lunch for about an hour. During the second session 1-3pm we would have 2 or 3 identical computers each disassembled in front of 2 or 3 groups. Then slowly put it together with each group giving the students an oppurtunity to put it together themselves. All the parts can be borrowed from the tech shop. If time permits we can go over some troubleshooting. To go along with the presentation we will have a handout which outlines everything so the students can remember what they did. --Right now this architecture seminar ii tentatively set to go down Saturday, March 1. Now for the high school girls recruitment committee. This group consisted of Dr. Knox, Emils, Olivia, Maria, Jesse, and myself. For those who do not know, we are trying to recruit girls to come to TCNJ and major in computer science. There is no doubt that the female gender is under-represented in the department and we are trying to change that. We have decided that the recruitment seminar will occur sometime during the Spring. Although we did not decide on an exact day, it will be on a Saturday, starting in the morning. We want to give the girls a taste of computer science, but not overwelme them with complex topics. Right now the plan is to step them through the creation of a web page. Other events of the day will include a speaker from thi admissions office and also a speaker from the computer science department. Note that none of this is set in stone. Lunch would be provided, possibly by letting food services provide pizza. This is a big project and we would advertise to schools around here, both in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. After these committees ended discussion, two more seperate groups came together for discussion. These two groups were the games/social events committee and the grad/industry committee. Here is Frank's summary of the games/social events: Games and social events Frank, Dan, Chris, Mark, Ben, Steve, and Aaron We thought that another movie night would be nice on 12/5...the movies we have in mind are Star Wars II, Minority Report, MST 3000, or A.I. We will talking this over through email will come up with definate ideas for the event soon. For next semester we thought it would be a good idea to have a video game night. We would bring in a PS2 or Gamecube and hook it up to the projector. And, finally a pizza party would be an excellent idea for both faculty and cs students. Our tentative date is 12/4 so far but if we can't get enough faculty and students it might be betteto postpone to next semester. We are looking at a time slot like 12-2pm. Now for the grad/industry people. Basically, this group (Karl, Chris, Jesse, Emily, myself, Dr. Knox) has the responsibilty of hunting down former UPE alumns that we can contact and then they can come in and talk about graduate school and life in industry. Emily sent this group out a spreadsheet that lists the alums and we have to cross reference this with the people in the UPE alum book that is located in the UPE closet in the Sparc Lab. We were each assigned dates that we are responsible and here are those dates: Karl: 1997-95 Chris C: 94-92 Jesse: 91-89 Olivia: 88-86 Remeber to look in the UPE book for the dates and mark on the spreadsheet that Emily sent us who the UPE'ers are. Here is just some more miscellaneous stuff. The architecture group had some free time so they talked about some ideas for FACTS for next semester. Here are those ideas: Our groups ideas for FACTS sessions for next semester include the following: Research on the use of computers and graphics in high-tech movies, presentation on non-destructive hacking...anytime the word hacking is used people seem to be interested, and maybe research and comparisson on the major types of OS's used. I thought we could maybe extend this and make something a little more fun like a debate on Mac. OS vs. Windows. We could ge the faculty involved to and make panels with organized to debate. I think it could get very heated and spark a great deal of interest.
