MINUTES -- UPE Tuesday, Nov.26 ** BIG HAPPENINGS ** Well, this week's meeting was certainly very eventful as our quest for an award fund continued. As promised, Dr. Knox faithfully looked into the venture and came up with a guest speaker for our meeting - Anne Martens, the Director of Development and Alumni Affairs. It certainly was a blast... ANNE MARTENS -- Aimed with the knowledge of what we had in mind for this venture, Anne had come up with various suggestions on how we could go about it. Basically, after an hour's worth of talking and questioning, it boiled down to two solutions, one of which we will be deciding upon before the next meeting. They are as follows: Proposal #1 -- Basically, we would join up with her department and use their resources for our fundraising project. They would supply us with all of the necessary stationary, phones, postage, etc. etc. In return, we would mail our letter of solicitation to CS alumni in January, call the alumni in February and do follow-up calls for larger donations after that. By April 1st, they would have a projection as to how much money we would receive and would be able to match any lesser amounts gotten, if the case may be. In this proposal, the money we received would be divided into three parts: * 75% would go to the college-wide alumni annual fund (this fund directly goes to student merit scholarships) * 12.5% would go to the Dean of Arts and Sciences for faculty travel programs (money which is direly needed since the accreditation board demanded that the School of Arts and Sciences fully fund at least one faculty program per year) * 12.5% would go to the Computer Science Department, all of which, according to Chair Norman Neff, we could use for our award fund. Proposal #2 -- Our independent effort. We would not go through the Department of Alumni Affairs to coordinate the effort, but would do it ourselves. Thus, we would have to pay all of our own expenses for mailing (approx. 13 cents per letter, bulk rate), stationary, photocopying, labels (possibly donated from Anne's office) and phone calls (also possibly donated from her office, but we're not sure yet). However, we would receive 100% of the contributions. These two proposals were discussed and evaluated, and we basically felt that it would be more beneficial for the group to do it ourselves, but we need your input! Please e-mail us with your opinions and suggestions!!!! Some facts to think about when you're deciding: * There are 264 graduates of our Computer Science major from TSC. * Out of these, only 21 donated money to the school last year ($1,220)! * There is typically a 1% response by alumni when solicited by letter. * And typically a 30% response by alumni when solicited by phone. * Solicitation from industry is NOT RECOMMENDED by the college for private use such as ours. * However, if an alumni contributes, industry sometimes matches their contributions if they are an employee. Obviously, there are a lot of factors which go into this decision. Please weigh the pros and cons and let us know... PRETZEL SALE -- The only dates left for this semester, according to Kathy, are Friday Dec. 6th, Wednesday Dec. 11th and Friday Dec. 13th. We all decided that it would be too much for us to try to put that all together in time, so we are looking for dates for next semester. NEW INDUCTEES -- Since I haven't been able to contact the department office this week, Dr. Knox graciously offered to do so herself. She will have the list of possible candidates for induction by next meeting. Yeah! BROWNIES -- Thanks for the brownies that Dan, Dr. Knox's husband, made for us! They were so yummy!!!! :) NEXT MEETING -- Our next, and last, meeting of the semester will be on Tuesday, December 10th at 8:00 in Holman 107. Please try to make every effort to attend, as we really have a lot of stuff to do before break to make this all work out! We are enthusiastic about making UPE the best that it can be, but we need all the help that you can give! Have a nice day and great Thanksgiving Break!! :)
