UPE minutes 11/29/2000 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dues: If you haven't paid your dues yet, make a check payable to Nicole Pustai as soon as possible to be an official member of the club. Induction event: Right now the induction event is in its preliminary stages. We still need to determine where the event should take place. Possibilities include: a professor's house for dessert, a restaurant (everyone pays their own way), etc. This could also be a more formal event on campus with a faculty speaker giving a few inspirational words. Input from members? Volunteerism: It's important to have a way of giving back to the community. One idea is to design a database or a web site (or even revamp an existing web-site) for a non-profit organization that needs a little technical help. This would depend on the amount of time it would take and if members would be willing to make this kind of commitment. It could be opened up to the CS-club, as well. We could perhaps look for on-campus non-profit organizations first. Input from members? UPE Phone-a-thon: I need to contact Dianne at Alumni Affairs so that we can organize a time early in the semester to get a phone-a-thon put together. Many alumni have asked about the lack of inquiry this semester. This event must go on next semester to insure its success. UPE Web-updates: I sent Eileen the password, and as soon as I get the members list to Eileen, she can start working on the web page. Honor Cords: If members want to walk at graduation with honor cords, then the individual members have to buy them. They are sentimental as well as prestigious. The cost is $12 for chords, or $15 for medallion. http://www.acm.org/upe/#upe-memorabilia has more info. Contact Jason Victor if interested Dow Jones equipment: Dr. Knox was wondering if she could use the Dow Jones PC's and load Linux to the NT machine to perform some grant research on parallel computing. If the PCs are not being used, then this would be a good use for them. Sam Baskinger is the current contact for this situation. Fund-raising event: We need to come up with a way to raise money, even if it seems like a small amount, every little bit helps. Pretzel sales have been popular in the past. Students could sit in Forcina hall and toast fresh hot pretzels for a profit for the club. Would need to sign up on a list for on-campus fund raising events. ACM Speaker: We could possibly get an ACM speaker to come to the college in order to speak. This might be too late for this year, but a possibility for next year. Need to check out http://www.acm.org/top/ for details. Alumni Speaker event: We could get Alum to come back and talk about his/her job in the real world. Graig Fisher suggested that we could talk with some people on-campus IM people like Craig Kapp for lectures on how our systems work on campus. Fall picnic: Good event. Needs better planning more in advance in the spring semester.
