MINUTES -- UPE Tuesday, Dec. 10 NEW INDUCTEES This week was exciting since the inductees for next semester were asked to attend the meeting as guests of honor. Written invitations were handed out to the inductees and they were informed of the induction ceremony next semester, the $25 dues and of all the wonderful activities we've been discussing lately. The idea of holding an induction ceremony early next semester was discussed. As soon as grades for this semester have been calculated, we would like to see how many more people can be invited to join UPE and therefore have an early formal induction ceremony instead of waiting until the end of the year. We would also like to set up a system to automate in-major GPA's so that the process isn't so tedious. Inductees have been asked to RSVP to the invitation by Dec. 20th. MEETING TIMES FOR NEXT SEMESTER Since there is a CS Seminar class held next semester at 8pm on Tuesdays, a new meeting time was needed. A vote was held and bi-weekly meetings on Thursdays at 7pm were passed with only 1 vote opposed. ALUMNI LETTERS The results of everyone's vote regarding the alumni letters was 5 to 1 in favor of piggy-backing with the school's mailings. Anne Martens returned with her colleague Meredith Murray and they brought with them a copy of a sample letter and some ideas of things we might want to include in our letter. After much discussion, it was decided that Meredith would write a draft of the letter based on our brainstorming. Our brainstorming resulted in the following ideas which we would like included in the letter: 1. Out of 264 graduated CS majors, 21 contributed a total of $1220 last year. 2. The number of CS students currently receiving college-funded scholarships. 3. The CS dept. currently encourages academic achievement through yearly awards and would like to offer a financial award based on alumni contributions. 4. The critera the award is based on. 5. For every dollar donated by CS alumni, a portion will go directly to providing scholarships for worthy CS students and another portion will go to the annual awards given by the CS dept. Also, it was decided that the letter will be drafted from a student's point of view. Therefore, LJ will be signing the letter and a quote from her encouraging the alumni to donate money will be added to the letter. Next semester, we will review the draft written by Development and Alumni Affairs and we will probably be scheduling to use the phone banks sometime in February. GOODIES Thanks again to Dr. Knox for providing yummy brownies and cookies. NEXT SEMESTER E-mail will be sent regarding our first meeting next semester. Until then, I hope everyone enjoys the Winter Break! That's all for now, see ya next semester! :)
