How to Use Health Services
All TCNJ students currently enrolled in classes can be seen in Health Services. Click HERE to view the various health care services offered. Students can usually secure a same-day appointment for sickness if they call early in the day (609-771-2483) and not wait until the late afternoon. In times of high demand (cold and flu season), priority is given to those students with the most urgent medical conditions. First aid (burns, cuts, bee stings, etc.) is available on a walk-in basis. Visits to Health Services are free. However, laboratory tests, certain supplies (crutches, vaccinations, air casts, etc.) and prescriptions are not. The Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) helps defray these costs (see Student Health Insurance).
If you would rather NOT tell the receptionist why you want to be seen in Health Services, just say "It's Personal."
Notes for missed classes or assignments are NOT provided by Health Services. Please do not make an appointment solely for the purpose of documenting your illness. For more information, click HERE.
Health Services is NOT an emergency room and students should call 609-771-2167 (on-campus) or 9-1-1 (off-campus) to summon immediate medical attention (see Emergencies).
Allow 4 weeks for appointments for routine (no symptoms) STI screens and physicals (for study abroad, nursing, etc.). TB tests and flu shots are only available at specific dates and times during the semester (see Upcoming Health Events) and not by individual appointment.
It is important that students provide at least 2 hours notice for cancelled appointments. With enough notice, we can give someone else your appointment slot. Students who no-show for more than 2 appointments will be referred to an outside provider for future care.
Planned Parenthood is the on-campus provider for routine and problem gynecological care including STI screening (female students only) and birth control. Call 609-771-2110 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 10am-6pm, or 609-599-4881 at all other times to schedule an appointment at the TCNJ Planned Parenthood. Male students can obtain STI screening in TCNJ Health Services by calling 609-771-2889 to schedule an appointment. Students who think they may have been a victim of sexual assault can be seen in Health Services. Click HERE for more information. Emergency contraceptive pills (Plan B/Morning-After Pill) are available both in Health Services and Planned Parenthood. If you are over the age of 17, you can obtain emergency contraceptive pills at the local pharmacy without a prescription. Click HERE for more information. HIV testing is available every other Friday during the semester from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. on a walk-in basis and is free (Click HERE for dates and more information). Students under the age of 18 do not need parental consent in the State of New Jersey to obtain reproductive health care services.
Our Commitment to Diversity
As members of a multicultural community, the staff at Health Services strive to embrace and promote awareness of the human differences that enrich us all. These differences may be represented by, but are not limited to, age, race, ethnicity, religion, culture, gender, sexual orientation, spirituality, physical and mental abilities, and socioeconomic status. We recognize that these differences make each individual unique, and collectively add to our experience, wisdom, and enjoyment of life. At Health Services, we view awareness of diversity issues as an integral component of understanding human existence including the struggles, growth, and realization of each person. We foster the ideal that everyone can contribute toward creating an atmosphere of safety and understanding in our community. Toward this end, we are committed to fulfilling our role of responding to the health care needs of a diverse student community. As professionals, we not only educate others about the value of tolerance and understanding, but are also introspective of our own beliefs and views and their impact on our work. We consider ourselves privileged to be trusted by our patients. We fully understand the importance of viewing our patients as unique individuals within their cultural context.
