This course examines pairs of novels - one by a male author, one by a female author - from three or four cultures and periods. We explore the function of the novel in the society of the time, and explore the differences in theme, style, and character development, both across culture and between male and female authors. For modern authors, we write or fax those authors with questions that emerge from the class's critical examination of the novel. Finally, we consider literary theory and criticism in relation to cultural differences and gender differences.
