This course will examine European
Social History in a period historians have looked at as the beginning of the
'modern' era. We will begin by analyzing the Enlightenment and French
Revolution launched a political era where broader participation of the citizenry
gradually became the norm. We will then consider the demographic shifts
brought on by the Industrial Revolution and trace the development of responses
to rapid modernization by the middle class, working class, and women.
Topics will include the development of liberalism, socialism, imperialism and
nationalism. |
