9/15/06 - First Meeting of Fall 2006

  • We've decided to change our meeting habits - until this doesn't work anymore, we'll meet every Friday at 2 PM in the second floor lounge of Holman
  • WICS has changed from Women in Computer Science to Women in Computing and Science in an attempt to appeal to a broader range of students (Karen said she will help us update the website banner image - thanks!)
  • We're going to try to become a chapter of ACM-W. To help with this, please let me know if you're a paid student member of ACM (i.e. you have membership with the ACM organization, not just TCNJ's student chapter)
  • We plan on being involved in the upcoming Community Day event, Jaclyn is going to look into signing us up for this. The idea is to set up a table that, preferably, has some kind of event or attraction. Last year the point of our table was to get people interested in computer science. Email wics/me/the officers if you have any ideas
  • We're going to try to arrange a fundraiser between us, ACM, and UPE to raise money in order to provide funds for students to attend conferences and the ACM Programming Contest and to help fund events like Community Day.
  • A jewelry fundraiser similar to the one ACM had last year was the most popular idea. Everyone at the meeting who had supplies for this offered to donate some - thank you! More info will follow in future emails.
  • We also considered seeing if we could participate with the ACM and involve UPE in a Geek Auction (where CS students sell their expertise in an auction, ACM has done this before). More information on this will follow.
  • If you have another fundraising ideas, please email WICS/me/one of the other officers
  • We discussed the addition of a Tutoring section to the WICS website. The current idea was to provide a web form requesting the class, the professor, the project (if applicable), and their question. We'll post adisclaimer to the site that we'll be happy to help but won't actually do their homework for them. The plan is to submit the data via email to the WICS account (although if this takes off we may find a forum atmosphere better...). Email me/wics if you want to help and I'll send you the account password.
  • We discussed the possibility of having 1 or 2 of us camping out in the labs 123 and 117 in Holman whenever you have free time to help other CS students out (i.e. more tutoring). If you're interested, email me/wics with what courses you can help with and what times would be best for you on a regular basis. The idea is to be present in the room so other students can ask you questions if they need to, we're going to coordinate this with the professors. Specifics about tutoring stuff will follow in subsequent emails
  • We discussed speaker events for the current semester. We're going to try to contact Nadine Stern, who previously offered to speak for us, and Jaclyn is going to try to get someone from Lockheed Martin to come and speak as well.
  • We're going to arrange events this year regarding graduate school, getting a job, resumes, etc. More information will be announced as these events are planned.
  • We want to do social events this year - 2 ideas that were brought up were bowling and a trip to NYC (especially since theres a NJTRANSIT promo going on soon for students). More information on these items will follow shortly.
  • ACM/IEEE is going to hold their annual Computer Graphics Film Show in October, where they will "feature the latest and greatest computer animations direct from the ACM SIGGRAPH conference." More details can be found here .
