TCNJ's Department of Biology

The Department of Biology offers a broad-based biology student researchercurriculum, which emphasizes analytical skills, critical thinking, and hands-on practical experience with up-to-date instrumentation. The curriculum provides a foundation with a survey course (Themes in Biology) and four additional core courses (Genetics, Eukaryotic Cell Biology, Ecology and a Biology Seminar capstone class); students may then choose from a broad array of upper division courses to complete their degree. Students who complete the Biology major are well-prepared to continue on to teach or to enter graduate school, professional school in the health sciences, or the workforce. Our graduates find that their applications are highly competitive.

BioBldg front in springThe College is committed in its support of the department’s efforts to develop into a community of teacher-scholars. Our 76,000 sq ft building dedicated entirely to Biology has over $3 million in scientific equipment and computing and multimedia hardware, all of which is available for shared use by faculty and students.

One of the most significant experiences for many biology majors is their participation in an independent research project or internship with a faculty member in the Biology Department or with research scientists at other institutions. (Read more about student accomplishments, and specific research done by our students.)
